This is the second book (The First Girl Child started the series) but this reads as a stand-alone。 It is in the same world but with unique characters。 I have my fingers crossed there will be more!! I will be chatting with Amy on Wednesday, July 21 at 7pm MST on an IG live if you want to chat with us and learn more about this book! 。。。more

The Second Blind Son is heartwarming and magical。 But it's also fraught with uncertainty and skepticism as we get to follow the journey of Hod and Ghisla。 She's lost and separated from her homeland and all that she knows。 He's the blind boy who finds her on his shore and nurses her back to health。 Their lifelong bond starts from there, even through years of separation and much despair。 I wasn't sure this fantasy world would be for me once again but Amy Harmon weaves a tale in her decidedly brill The Second Blind Son is heartwarming and magical。 But it's also fraught with uncertainty and skepticism as we get to follow the journey of Hod and Ghisla。 She's lost and separated from her homeland and all that she knows。 He's the blind boy who finds her on his shore and nurses her back to health。 Their lifelong bond starts from there, even through years of separation and much despair。 I wasn't sure this fantasy world would be for me once again but Amy Harmon weaves a tale in her decidedly brilliant way that encouraged me to take my time and savor every word and I am damn glad I did。You have to understand that this genre just isn't usually for me。 But the deep and abiding love that Hod and his Ghisla have for one another is like nothing I have ever read about。 Hod's sense of hearing is beyond acute。 Together with his knowledge of runes and the power they hold, his ability to actually see when Ghisla sings gave me goosebumps。 It's like this ethereal kind of tether between them, strengthened by their shared palm-scarred rune, as they can 'hear' each other's thoughts even though they are lands away from the other。 Their forced separation never lessens the affection they share and in spite of all they endure, especially at the hands of the evil king that is Banruud, I could feel the glimmer of hope that continued to reside in each of their souls。Harmon peels back the layers of Saylok, giving us more than a glimpse of Bayr, Alba, and other key characters from book one。 I loved that she showcases more than just the constant battles for power amongst the various clans, and lets the love stories shine through all the mayhem and disillusionments。 We get to really get to know Hod and Ghisla intimately as well as her temple sisters and their Keepers。 I felt as if I was truly within the pages of this story and as I got more into it, I honestly couldn't wait to see what would happen next。Hod is simply wonderful in every way。 Brave, loyal, and smart, he never lets his lack of sight prevent him from doing what is necessary。 His patience proves valuable in more ways than one and helps set the course for what would need to transpire in the very near future in order to save Saylok。 I wanted to imagine him hearing my own thumping heart as I fell hard for his quiet grace and strength。 It's no wonder Ghisla wanted to move mountains if she could, to find her man again。There is much at play as clans under the king's rule get restless and secrets slowly come to light that threatens everyone's safety and existence in Saylok。 Happily, though, the very core of this book continues to be the power of love and the spellbinding effect it can have on a blind boy and the lost girl of his dreams。 For Hod and Ghisla, their path to any semblance of freedom and contentment is littered with starts, stops, and forces out of their control。 But when their hearts beat as one, they are truly invincible。The Second Blind Son is meticulous while gloriously breathtaking。 It's subtle yet compelling and is Amy Harmon at her very best。 Once again, I might add。 I appreciate that she never writes the same story twice and takes chances in different genres to appeal to an expansive audience。 I'm thrilled I had the chance to broaden my own horizons with this book and I happily give it a huge 5+ stars! 。。。more

This is the 2nd book in a series, and will most likely be less satisfying if you haven't read the first one。 This story evolves over the same timeline as the first, and is very closely tied, so many of the events that happen are experienced again but from a different viewpoint, which was interesting。 Also a little annoying, to encounter entire dialogues that seemed to be literally copy/pasted from the first book This story, like the first, has a fairy tale feel to it, but not quite as ill-fated This is the 2nd book in a series, and will most likely be less satisfying if you haven't read the first one。 This story evolves over the same timeline as the first, and is very closely tied, so many of the events that happen are experienced again but from a different viewpoint, which was interesting。 Also a little annoying, to encounter entire dialogues that seemed to be literally copy/pasted from the first book This story, like the first, has a fairy tale feel to it, but not quite as ill-fated as a fairy tale usually is。 A long distance romance develops, but the two lovers stay apart even as their circumstances evolve to the point where they could just run away together, which I continuously felt like they should have done。 Ghisla is not close to anyone at the temple where she lives as a token female in a country with no female births。 Hod, the blind monk boy living in a remote cave is her only friend and confidant。 Hod initially is under the care of another monk in their isolated cave, but as years pass becomes quite independent despite being blind。 They sort of just go along with the events as they unfold, and are manipulated by the stories of the other characters。 It's a well told, engaging story though, and I did enjoy it。 。。。more

Woven through the pages of this historical fantasy romance is a story of family legacy and how the acceptance of extraordinary gifts and the embracement of distinctive impediments will guide those to find a place in the world。 I wasn’t expecting so much beauty from this story。 Although the romance is sweet, what I am referring to is the pleasurable quality of this story to your mind and spirit。 Hod isn’t your standard self-assertive hero。 He’s patient, pure, inspirational and of divine descent。 Ghisla has strength, courage and fortitude。 Her insight sees herself and Hod through many difficult times and adversities。 Together their story radiates goodness and sentimentality。While some authors are world builders describing their visions in words and transporting you to their imagination; others are storytellers, drawing you in and turning those pages until no more remain。 Amy Harmon does both。 The world is complex and engaging。 The characters are lovely and layered。 Truly another great from this talented author! 。。。more

*** A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by Netgalley and 47North in exchange for an honest review。 Thank you! ***(view spoiler)[It's no secret that Amy Harmon is one of my absolute favorite authors and I know that I might be a bit biased when it comes to her work。。。 But the fact is: her stories manage to blow me away without fail, and this newest book The Second Blind Son is no exception。 I LOVED the first book set in Saylok, The First Girl Child, back when I read it in 2019 and it was an instant all time favorite。 I've been excited to return to the same high fantasy world ever since I first found out about this sequel (I even reread the first book to refresh memories), and I can now say that this story is just as fantastic as the first one。Once again the high fantasy worldbuilding really makes the story stand out, and we learn more about the different clans of Saylok as well as those who live outside Saylok。 A little warning: technically The Second Blind Son focuses on the story of two new main characters, but you will find this story to be much intertwined with the first book and it's definitely adviced to read the two in order to avoid major spoilers。 Both books are utterly fantastic in the first place, so you would be missing out by not reading Alba and Bayr's story first! Back to this sequel: we get more Norse mythology elements woven into the plot and worldbuilding, and I loved learning more about the blind god Hod and Baldr。 The mythology elements are cleverly and seamleI also loved that we get to return to some of our old favorite characters as well as getting to know the new stars of the show。 Alba, Bayr, Ghost, Dagmar。。。 There are so many fantastic characters in the first book, and it was a true pleasure to meet up with them again。 The 'new' characters are just as easy to grow fond of, and I loved reading about Ghisla (Liis of Leok in the first book) and Hod's story。 Both have such fascinating backgrounds and were able to win over my heart immediately。。。 And I had such a great time seeing their lives unfold。 The romance itself was spot on for me and didn't distract from the rest of the story at all, which is always a bonus。The Second Blind Son not only gives us Ghisla and Hod's story, but also a new perspective on events that took place in the first book。 The story mainly takes place during the same years of the first book, and this is exactly why we can revisit those favorite characters along the way。 It is such a clever way of writing a sequel based on old events while also offering a completely new storyline, and I personally didn't mind that some scenes were basically almost the same。 The writing is just as utterly brilliant as always and I basically couldn't stop reading once I started the first chapter and properly met our new star characters。In short, there is a lot to love in this high fantasy sequel and I absolutely loved my time with The Second Blind Son。 If you enjoy a well written high fantasy sequel with a healthy dose of romance, Norse mythology elements, thoroughly developed and highly likeable characters and brilliant writing and plot, I can highly recommend both books of the series。 Without doubt one of my highlights of the year so far! Kaylee,
This BOOK, y’all。 I am finally getting around to expressing my feelings on this incredible story。 If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you’ll know that Amy Harmon is by far my favorite author。 She always brings the reader beautiful characterization, excellent research and world building, & a perfectly paced plot。 This book was no exception, and I am legitimately sad it is over🥺🥺In this second book in the series, we return to Saylok in the same period of time as The First Girl Chil This BOOK, y’all。 I am finally getting around to expressing my feelings on this incredible story。 If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you’ll know that Amy Harmon is by far my favorite author。 She always brings the reader beautiful characterization, excellent research and world building, & a perfectly paced plot。 This book was no exception, and I am legitimately sad it is over🥺🥺In this second book in the series, we return to Saylok in the same period of time as The First Girl Child。 I was totally blown away by how Harmon was able to weave these two stories together so seamlessly。 I think you could read this one as a stand-alone, but I definitely recommend reading TFGC first! These feel like historical fiction that delves into the fantasy realm… think Norse-mythology, blood runes, warring clans & wisdom Keepers。 Riiiight up my alley。In this story, we get to meet Hod & Ghisla。 Hod is blind, though is blessed with heightened sensations to the world around him。 When he meets Ghisla, he discovers that when she sings, she can help him see the world in a whole new way。 These two have such an instant connection of their souls, and my heart just ACHED from their sweet relationship。 I adored Ghisla, and thought she was such a fierce & relatable main character。 But, the only thing I love more than how Harmon writes her female characters is how she writes her men。 Hod was such a standout character to me, & is going down as one of my favorites。 He had such a quiet strength about him。 He was humble, gentle, & endlessly kind, all while being protective and incredibly brave。 My only critique is that I could have read 500 more pages about this duo & this world (but maybe there will be more???🤞🏼) 。。。more
MJ Symmonds,
The Second Blind Son was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of this year。 After falling in love with this world with The First Girl Child I was eagerly awaiting a new installation in The Chronicles of Saylok and I've fallen even more in love with this Norse Mythology series。Two people meet at a time when the clans are on the brink of war, the King is hiding many secrets and making alliances that will not bode well for the people of Saylok。 They meet when they really need someone to help The Second Blind Son was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of this year。 After falling in love with this world with The First Girl Child I was eagerly awaiting a new installation in The Chronicles of Saylok and I've fallen even more in love with this Norse Mythology series。Two people meet at a time when the clans are on the brink of war, the King is hiding many secrets and making alliances that will not bode well for the people of Saylok。 They meet when they really need someone to help them see that there is more, that they are more and that when even distance separates them they will still be able to find each other。 Hod is the blind boy who has been raised in a cave by the cave keeper Arwin。 He has learned how to harness the power of his other senses to ensure his own safety。 Ghisla is a Songr who has lost everything and everyone close to her and now she has washed ashore only to find a blind boy and his cave。 A place she never wants to leave but must as Hod's teacher Arwin tells her she cannot stay and must be presented to the Mount and the Keepers。 Now she will be separated by distance from Hod but nothing will ever break the chains that bind their hearts as one。 This book is nothing short of magical。 I could get lost in this world over and over and never want to leave!!**Received ARC through NetGalley。 Voluntarily reviewed ** 。。。more
Jessica,
The lyrical writing of this tale punches into your chest grabbing your heart and gripping your lungs leaving you aching and breathless。 Hod and Ghisla had you feel。 You felt their trials and tribulations。 It was an experience there in Saylok in that cave, on that mount。。。。they allowed you to see。

All the stars。 Not enough stars。 A new favorite。 ♥️ Every time I step into one of Amy’s book I am completely transported。 She has this ability to transfix you with her words and completely envelope you in the story at hand。 I took my time traveling through Saylok。 This dark land full of North Mythology and Viking-esque lore。 Stepping back into the same world from The First Girl Child was highly satisfying and while this second book can be read as a stand-alone。。。I highly recommend reading the fi All the stars。 Not enough stars。 A new favorite。 ♥️ Every time I step into one of Amy’s book I am completely transported。 She has this ability to transfix you with her words and completely envelope you in the story at hand。 I took my time traveling through Saylok。 This dark land full of North Mythology and Viking-esque lore。 Stepping back into the same world from The First Girl Child was highly satisfying and while this second book can be read as a stand-alone。。。I highly recommend reading the first to get a more fully fleshed out experience for The Second Blind Son。 The characters? Completely on point。 Hod is the blind hero we have desperately been looking for in stories。 His kindness and bravery and gentle nature stole my heart。 A new favorite character of all time。。。seriously though。 And Ghisla? She is tough and unafraid and loves fiercely。 The coupling of these two souls was the heart of this book and I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH。 “Don’t worry Ghisla, I am just a blind man。 Everyone looks past me”“I didn’t”“No。。。I felt the moment you saw me” “You put your hand on your heart” I loved it。 The gritty, raw and dark nature of this story。。。and honestly I wouldn’t have had it any other way。 I was swept up in all the magical and political elements that just kept adding layer upon layer of depth to this story。I’m so sad it’s over but I sincerely hope Amy writes a third book for this series。 There is a certain couple id love to see more of in the future。 Thank you Amy and the publisher for this gifted book。 I am so very grateful。**violence and mature romantic content 。。。more
Erin Remen,
A well written work of art that takes us on a deeply emotional journey as Hod and Ghisla navigate the paths they find themselves on, the darkness that can overtake them when all seems lost and the strengths they find deep within in that may just carry them through and back to each other。 Written during the events of the first book we find ourselves reliving a few events through a different set of eyes that creates a whole new point of view, as well as really getting to know where Ghisla came fro A well written work of art that takes us on a deeply emotional journey as Hod and Ghisla navigate the paths they find themselves on, the darkness that can overtake them when all seems lost and the strengths they find deep within in that may just carry them through and back to each other。 Written during the events of the first book we find ourselves reliving a few events through a different set of eyes that creates a whole new point of view, as well as really getting to know where Ghisla came from and her harrowing journey from orphan to Sayloks shores as well as following Hod as he navigates life as a supplicant who happens to be blind。 It's spellbinding, dark, unbelievably heartbreaking and such an absolute joy to read。 A magical world full of old Norse lore, characters you cherish and a storyline that is unforgettable!
